The stage is set for Phil Mickelson to give himself one heck of a birthday present on his 43rd birthday. 5 times Mickelson has been the runner-up in a US Open. Today he is in position again to contend for the major win that would finally close the book on the all blown chances Mickelson gave away in years past.
What a father’s day this would be if Mickelson could finally wrap his hand around a US Open win. Phil comes into the final round with a 1 stroke lead and he knows he has to play smart golf today. We all remember how Phil called himself an idiot once before when he played a driver to put himself into trouble at another US Open.
Phil left the driver at home this week and he has done everything possible this week to take the word idiot out of his vocabulary. If Phil can continue to play smart golf in the final round today, he very well could be the winner of the 113th US Open Championship.
There are 6 other players within 2 strokes of the lead coming into the final round today. Phil knows this course offers one of the best challenges in the game of golf. Even though the course is mentally challenging, Phil is having fun this week.
Mickelson tees off today at 3:20 P.M. Est. This championship means as much to Phil as any he has won in his professional career. I have a feeling this one is going to come down to the wire. Phil knows this course isn’t going to give him or the others anything today.
He expects some pretty tough pin placements and with the way he has hit his irons this week, we can expect Mickelson to fire at the birdie holes and try to extend his lead. Whether or not Phil is able to find those birdies is something we are all going to have to wait and see.
This would be one of the best birthday presents Phil could give himself. At 43-years-old, his time to win an US Open could be running out.
