This week the world’s number 2 Phil Mickelson goes up against the world’s number one Tiger Woods at a place that Woods loves to win at. Phil isn’t too far behind Woods in the world golf rankings. He is only trialing Tiger by 3.9 points.
Mickelson has been one of the hottest guys on tour over the past few weeks. He won the Scottish Open and then the Open Championship just a week later. He is in great shape coming into the World Golf Championships at Firestone.
Woods on the other hand may have peaked too soon this season. He hasn’t won at Firestone in 4 years,he does have 7 wins at the place he says he loves, but does he still have the game needed to post an 8th win?
Those are some of the things people are wondering. Woods is far from washed up and he is still young enough to get his game back together. Mickelson who is 43-years-old knows it is now or never to over take Tiger Woods as the Worlds number one.
If Phil can bring the same game to Firestone that he had in Europe, it is going to be tough to beat him. Phil played some of the best golf of his career in the Open Championship and he knows it. He is more focused than ever before and if he can contain his excitement for shot making, I think he has a great chance to add a world golf championship to his wins this season.
The tournament gets underway tomorrow and we should get a glimpse of which Mickelson shows up in Thursday’s first round.
