At 42 years of age Golfer Phil Mickelson arrived back at Merion Golf Club around 4:30A.M. after making a cross country trip back to San Diego last night. Not many would dare leave the site of a US Open the night before the tournament started, especially one with a 7:05 tee time.
Lets face it, Mickelson is no spring chicken anymore. He is getting into the late stages of his PGA tour career and at his age pulling an all-nighter the day before the big test is not advisable. Play at the tournament has been suspended due to the inclement weather that has moved into the area.
This suspension could last most of the day. It could have come at a better time for Mickelson. He played 5 holes before the horns blew and he was at even par when the USGA called play. Phil stated play with a bogey in the cup at the first hole. He started at hole #11 and made it through the 15th before play was called.
Phil got back to even par when he birdied the par 3 13th hole. He goes into a safe haven tied for 12th place and he can now get some much needed rest to come back out after the weather delay to give the 113th US Open his all. Mickleson could benefit greatly from this weather delay.
Some may see this as an inconvenience, it could have been a welcomed event for Mickelson.
